EBacc

English Baccalaureate: a set of GCSE subjects covering English, Maths, Sciences, a humanity and a language.

The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) is not a qualification - it is a combination of GCSE subjects that the Department for Education considers a "core academic" curriculum.

A pupil is said to "take the EBacc" if they sit GCSEs in:

  • English Language and English Literature
  • Maths
  • Two Sciences (Combined Science counts as two)
  • A humanity (History or Geography)
  • A Modern or Ancient Language

Schools report two EBacc figures:

  • EBacc entry % - the proportion of pupils taking the full set
  • EBacc 9-5 % - the proportion who passed it at grade 5 or above

A school with a low EBacc entry rate isn’t automatically worse, but it may be steering pupils toward easier qualifications. Read it alongside Progress 8 for a balanced picture.
