KS2 SATs

National tests sat at the end of Year 6 in English Reading, Maths and Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling.

KS2 SATs (Key Stage 2 Standard Assessment Tests) are the national tests pupils sit at the end of Year 6, around mid-May.

The tests cover:

  • Reading (60 minutes)
  • Maths (three papers covering arithmetic and reasoning)
  • Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)

Writing is teacher-assessed rather than externally tested, but it is still reported.

Each child receives a scaled score out of 120, with 100 marking the "expected standard". Schools also report:

  • The percentage of pupils meeting the expected standard
  • The percentage achieving a higher score (typically 110+)
  • A progress score for each subject, similar to Progress 8 but measured from the start of Reception

KS2 SATs feed directly into secondary-school setting decisions and - in selective areas - help inform 11+ outcomes. They are also the main public measure of a primary school’s performance.
